Dover town history

Tribes of the Wisset, Powisset and Pegan Indians were the earliest inhabitants of the area. Their history here is reflected in the names of many places around town such as Noanet Pond, named after a local chief.

The land comprising the modern town of Dover was originally part of Dedham, established in 1636. In 1784, the District of Dover separated from Dedham and was incorporated as a town in 1836.

The town's location along the Charles River has played a large role in the development of its industries. Farming and farm-related business have always been the areas of most significant industry. During the mid to late 1800's saw, grist and iron mills were powered by the Charles River and supplemented the agricultural economy. By 1861, the railroad lines connected Dover to the rest of the Commonwealth.

The early 1900's were quite prosperous for Dover. The area saw a large influx of wealthy Bostonians who were drawn to the town's

Open-space preservation and the protection of woodlands are top priorities in Dover. Much of the town's character is defined by it's broad fields, rustic stone walls and pastoral landscapes. Not only are these areas appreciated for their beauty, but for the numerous recreational possibilities they present. Walking, jogging, hiking, picnicking and nature observing are the most popular activities. Tennis courts, baseball/softball and football fields are also located in town.

Dover's country atmosphere, its exceptional town services and it's convenient location make Dover one of the most sought after communities in Massachusetts.
