Their history here is reflected in the names of many places around town such as Noanet Pond, named after a local chief.The land comprising the modern town of Dover was originally part of Dedham, established in 1636. In 1784, the District of Dover separated from Dedham and was incorporated as a town in 1836. The town's location along the Charles River has played a large role in the development of its industries. Farming and farm-related business have always been the areas of most significant industry. During the mid to late 1800's saw, grist and iron mills were powered by the Charles River and supplemented the agricultural economy.
